Hello ITD! It is hard to believe that this is our last week. I have had a lot of fun doing this with you guys and girls. I have learned a lot since beginning this with you! I hope to continue this with you in the future!

This weeks posting: What is the one thing you are afraid of here on earth?

I am afraid of snakes, especially in Thailand. I do not have a fear of them on a daily basis. However, when I see one I am pretty afraid. It seems as though they are all poisonous here in Thailand, and they kill you pretty fast!

Hello ITD! We are in the last two weeks of the course. I have learned a lot from you guys. I hope this is helping you too! I am going to post some grammar rules and examples of some common mistakes on this blog in the next few days. We are lacking some participation on the blog board by many, but I really enjoy reading the responses of those that do respond...thank you!

This weeks post/question:
Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

I see myself as principal of a school preparing for retirement. I hope to be living wherever God wants me to serve Him best. I want to see both of my children graduated from university and beginning their careers. Also, I see myself playing a lot more golf!

Hi ITD. I emailed you this week's assignment directly. Please let me know if you did not receive the email at cwolski@gmail.com.

This week's blog post: Please tell us about your favorite aspect of Thailand.
For me, I love the Thai people. They are generally a super nice people and willing to help with most anything. I understand why this country is called the "Land of Smiles."

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Hello ITD. We are entering into week 5. This weeks blog post will center around what you wanted to be when you grew up.

As a child I really loved animals, and I still do. Therefore, I wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up. I thought it would be a great way to help animals and fulfill my desires.

Week 5 assignment coming soon!

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Hello ITD. Thank you to all that responded last week. I am missing a few people's responses. Everyone that sent me work should have received comments tonight. Please let me know if you did not. I will be sending out this week's assignment shortly!

This weeks blog response: What is the one future event that you are most looking forward to, within the next year?

My response: I am looking forward to going to Chiang Mai in a few weeks. We have not been there yet. I have heard so many wonderful things about the place. It will be a relaxing week!

Sunday, September 16, 2012

Hello ITD. Sorry about the delay in getting you feedback this week. Fighting some sort of sickness. Hopefully, I am starting to get a bit better. I have enjoyed reading about the way all of you like to spend your free time. You certainly are a diverse group.

OK...the week three blog post is the following:
Please tell briefly about the best day you have ever had.

My best day ever would have to be the day my wife said she would marry me. I knew the woman of my dreams was going to be my partner for life. We have had so many great journeys together, especially moving to Thailand.

I will be sending you the assignment for the week very soon!

Matching up subjects and verbs
Correctly matching up singular or plural subjects with singular or plural forms of a verb is part of the process called agreement. This is easy in simple sentences:
He admits that he is worried.[singular subject (he) and verb]
They admit that they are worried.[plural subject (they) and verb]
But more complex sentences can be trickier:
More than one in ten health club members admit to joining a gym for social reasons.
Although at first glance, the subject of the above sentence (more than one in ten health club members) may appear to be singular, it is in fact plural (= 'more than one'), so you should use the plural verb admit.
TIP: try replacing the subject of the sentence with an appropriate pronoun (in this case the plural pronoun they):
They admit to joining a gym for social reasons.[not They admits to joining a gym ..]

Hello ITD! Welcome to week two. I appreciate all of you submitting early and on time this week. I posted a pretty lengthy "grammar tips" prior to this posting.

This weeks blog posting assignment: Please tell us about your favorite leisure activity outside of work - I enjoy playing basketball. It allows me to expend a great amount of energy without feeling like I am "working out." I also enjoy playing golf when I can afford to play.

I will be emailing you your assignment soon!

Rule 1

Subject pronouns are used when the pronoun is the subject of the sentence. You can remember subject pronouns easily by filling in the blank subject space for a simple sentence.
Example:
______ did the job.
I, you, he, she, it, we, and they all fit into the blank and are, therefore, subject pronouns.

Rule 2

Subject pronouns are also used if they rename the subject. They follow to be verbs such asis, are, was, were, am, and will be.
Examples:
It is he.
This is she speaking.
It is we who are responsible for the decision to downsize.
NOTE: In spoken English, most people tend to follow to be verbs with object pronouns. Many English teachers support (or at least have given in to) this distinction between written and spoken English.
Example:
It could have been them.
Better:
It could have been they.
Example:
It is just me at the door.
Better:
It is just I at the door.

Rule 3

Object pronouns are used everywhere else (direct object, indirect object, object of the preposition). Object pronouns are me, you, him, her, it, us, and them.
Examples:
Jean talked to him.
Are you talking to me?
To be able to choose pronouns correctly, you must learn to identify clauses. A clause is a group of words containing a verb and subject.

Rule 4a

A strong clause can stand on its own.
Examples:
She is hungry.
I am feeling well today.

Rule 4b

A weak clause begins with words such as although, since, if, when, and because. Weak clauses cannot stand on their own.
Examples:
Although she is hungry...
If she is hungry...
Since I am feeling well...

Rule 4c

If a sentence contains more than one clause, isolate the clauses so that you can decide which pronoun is correct.
Examples:
Weak
Strong
[Although she is hungry,]
[she will give him some of her food.]
[Although this gift is for him,]
[I would like you to have it too.]

Rule 5

To decide whether to use the subject or object pronoun after the words than or as, mentally complete the sentence.
Examples:
Tranh is as smart as she/her.
If we mentally complete the sentence, we would say, "Tranh is as smart as she is." Therefore, she is the correct answer.
Zoe is taller than I/me.
Mentally completing the sentence, we have, "Zoe is taller than I am."
Daniel would rather talk to her than I/me.
We can mentally complete this sentence in two ways: "Daniel would rather talk to her than to me." OR "Daniel would rather talk to her than I would." As you can see, the meaning will change depending on the pronoun you choose.

Rule 6

Possessive pronouns show ownership and never need apostrophes.
Possessive pronouns: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs
NOTE: The only time it's has an apostrophe is when it is a contraction for it is or it has.
Examples:
It's a cold morning.
The thermometer reached its highest reading.

Rule 7

Reflexive pronouns - myself, himself, herself, itself, themselves, ourselves, yourself, yourselves- should be used only when they refer back to another word in the sentence.
Correct:
I worked myself to the bone.
Incorrect:
My brother and myself did it.
The word myself does not refer back to another word.
Correct:
My brother and I did it.
Incorrect:
Please give it to John or myself.
Correct:
Please give it to John or me.

Hello ITD! One issue to deal with and then I will let you in on the first assignment. I realize that not everyone can post on the blog because they do not have a Gmail account. Therefore, I will be using the blog to post some  common issues I may be seeing. Also, I will use it to post some helpful hints and tips. You will NOT have to post anything to the blog unless you feel like sharing.
OK week one assignment: Describe your typical workday from the time you leave your house until the time you get home. Use present tense only for this assignment. Please email it to me at cwolski@gmail.com or if you are using Google docs. make sure to share the document with me. If you are not totally sure about present tense here is a link that may help you out a bit: http://grammar.about.com/od/pq/g/prestenseterm.htm

I emailed all of you through my Google+ account. Please let me know if you did not receive the email.

I really enjoyed meeting all of you yesterday. It is always helpful to be able to put a name with a face. I am really excited to work with all of you over the next eight weeks. I hope that we can learn together and that you will get what you want to accomplish from this course.
I did not know that you had to have a Gmail account to respond to posts that I place on the blog. I know everyone does not have a Gmail account, and I am sure some do not want to create one just for this course. Therefore, I will use the blog that is set up to make some general comments to the group about using the English language to communicate, and some "hints-and-tips" as we go along over the next eight weeks.
I thank those of you that introduced yourselves on the blog. I will email you your week one assignment by tonight.

Friday, August 31, 2012

Please introduce yourself. Respond as if you are speaking to the person that replies before you. The person responding first will reply to me. For example, "Hello Chris, I am Brian..."
